Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su announced Tuesday that the chipmaker expects the AI data center market to reach $1 trillion by 2030, unveiling an ambitious growth strategy at the company's Financial Analyst Day in New York that positions AMD to capture a larger share of the booming artificial intelligence infrastructure market.

Speaking at the Nasdaq, Su outlined plans for the company to achieve more than 35% annual revenue growth over the next three to five years, with its data center AI segment expected to expand at an 80% compound annual growth rate during the same period. The announcement comes one week after AMD reported record third-quarter revenue of $9.2 billion, up 36% year-over-year.

Challenging Nvidia's Dominance

AMD's $1 trillion market projection contrasts sharply with Nvidia's estimate, with CEO Jensen Huang forecasting the broader AI infrastructure market will reach $3 trillion to $4 trillion by 2030. Nvidia currently dominates the AI chip landscape with over 90% market share, though AMD has been steadily gaining ground.

"There's no question, data center is the largest growth opportunity out there, and one that AMD is very, very well-positioned for," Su said at the event. The company aims to secure double-digit market share in the AI data center sector within three to five years, up from an estimated 6% today.

AMD's strategy centers on its landmark October 2025 partnership with OpenAI, which will see the AI firm deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs starting with 1 gigawatt of MI450 series chips in the second half of 2026. Chief Financial Officer Jean Hu indicated the company expects data center AI revenue to reach tens of billions of dollars by 2027.

Expanding Beyond AI Accelerators

AMD's revised $1 trillion market estimate—double the $500 billion figure Su cited in June—now encompasses a broader portfolio including CPUs, networking components, and AI accelerators. The company projects achieving more than 50% server CPU revenue market share, up from 40% today, while also targeting 40% of the client PC market.

The chipmaker has invested heavily in building its AI capabilities, spending over $40 billion on research and development and more than $60 billion on acquisitions in the past five years. This includes the $4.9 billion purchase of ZT Systems completed in March 2025, which added rack-scale systems design expertise to AMD's portfolio.
