Anthropic's Bold Move: Expanding in London's AI Hub
Anthropic has secured a 158,000-square-foot office in London's Knowledge Quarter at Regent's Place, with capacity for up to 800 employees — a fourfold increase from its current workforce of more than 200 in the city. The expansion, reported on Tuesday, comes as the Claude AI maker faces an unprecedented standoff with the U.S. government while experiencing surging commercial demand for its products.
A Talent Arms Race in King's Cross
The new office positions Anthropic in one of London's most concentrated AI corridors, alongside Google DeepMind and Meta, as competition for UK AI talent intensifies. The move follows OpenAI's announcement last week that it had signed a lease for an 88,500-square-foot permanent London office at nearby Regent Quarter in King's Cross, with capacity for more than 500 staff and an expected opening in 2027.
OpenAI currently employs about 200 people in London. "The UK boasts an exceptional pool of talent and a robust history in AI," said Phoebe Thacker, who leads OpenAI's London site. Anthropic's expansion dwarfs that of its rival in both scale and immediacy, underscoring the company's aggressive growth trajectory in Europe.
Geopolitics Driving Expansion
The London push comes amid a dramatic deterioration in Anthropic's relationship with Washington. In late February, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company refused to remove guardrails preventing Claude from being used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Anthropic vowed to challenge the designation in court.
The UK government has moved swiftly to capitalize on the rift. The Financial Times reported in early April that staff at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology had drawn up proposals ranging from an expanded London office to a potential dual stock listing, with plans to present them to CEO Dario Amodei during a visit in late May. London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan also wrote directly to Amodei, calling London a "steadfast" base for the company.
Surging Revenue and Valuation
Anthropic's expansion is backed by rapid financial growth. The company's annual run-rate revenue has surpassed $30 billion, with more than 1,000 businesses each spending over $1 million annually on its products. Bloomberg reported this week that Anthropic has received investor offers valuing it at roughly $800 billion — more than double the $350 billion valuation from its $30 billion fundraising round in February — though the company has so far resisted the overtures.
