Gemini Traffic Drop: A Wake-Up Call for Google?

Gemini

Google's Gemini platform saw its share of global generative AI website traffic slip for a second consecutive month, according to SimilarWeb data through August 2026, even as the company pushes out new models and product integrations at a rapid clip.

A Momentum Shift

Gemini's traffic share fell to 25.6% in the latest monthly reading, down from 26.5% the prior month and 27.8% three months ago, according to SimilarWeb data reported by OfficeChai. Over the same period, ChatGPT moved in the opposite direction, climbing from 52.7% to 55.5%. The reversal is modest in percentage-point terms but notable given the trajectory both platforms had been on for much of the past year. A year ago, ChatGPT held 73.3% of generative AI traffic to Gemini's 12.9%. As recently as April, Gemini had been on one of the most dramatic growth runs in the generative AI market, roughly doubling its share in nine months.

The slowdown coincides with what analysts and observers have described as a gap in Google's product roadmap. Sundar Pichai previewed Gemini 3.5 Pro at Google I/O, but the model has yet to ship in a form that has translated into a fresh traffic bump. Earlier in the year, releases like Gemini 3 Pro and the Nano Banana image model helped fuel Gemini's surge; without a comparable catalyst in recent months, growth appears to have stalled.

Google Pushes New Products

Google has not been idle. On September 2, the company launched Gemini 3.8 Flash, which it called its "most intelligent" Flash model yet, alongside the Fairwind Program, which gives more than 650 government, cloud, and cybersecurity partners access to a specialized Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber model for autonomous vulnerability detection and patching. The new Flash model supports a one-million-token context window and is aimed at long-horizon software engineering and autonomous AI agents.

Separately, Google began rolling out its Gemini Spark AI agent to Google Photos, allowing users to organize, edit, and share their photo libraries through natural-language instructions. The integration, currently limited to eligible users aged 18 and over in the United States, can search photos, filter duplicates, create albums, and handle multi-stage requests without overwriting originals.

Competitive Landscape

Elsewhere in the rankings, Anthropic's Claude has held steady at roughly 9.2% to 9.5% of traffic over the past three months, while DeepSeek and Grok remain clustered between 2.4% and 3.6%. Alphabet shares have fallen more than 10% over the past month amid broader concerns about the company's AI competitiveness relative to Anthropic and OpenAI. Wall Street analysts, however, maintain a consensus "Strong Buy" rating on the stock, with an average price target implying roughly 27% upside.

Whether Gemini's dip marks the start of a longer plateau or a temporary pause before the next model release reignites growth remains an open question — but for the first time in over a year, the momentum in the generative AI traffic race is tilting back toward ChatGPT.
